Sibiu is easily reachable by car, if you go there from Bucharest, for instance (315 km, passing through Brasov.) It is also 430 km far from Budapest. One can also get to Sibiu either by train, or by plane.
Its history has started about 800 years ago. The present-day setting of the city has been attested by Pope Celestine the 3rd. Sibiu has always been a city of craftsmen who developed an intensive trade with Hungary, Poland, and with the southern Romanian province called Valachia.
Sibiu's German name is Hermannstadt (firstly mentioned in 1366). From the very beginning, the city represented a center for the German minority in Romania. Nowadays, Sibiu is known as a city of art and culture.
There are many touristic attractions in Sibiu. One of them is Piata Mare (The Grand Square), which can be found in the historical center of Sibiu and was initially mentioned as a cereal market in a document dating back in 1411. Throughout history, this place has been used for public executions and meetings. It is one of the biggest squares in Transylvania, and its southern part is considered an architectural monument.
Piata mica (The Small Square) is the second most important historical place in Sibiu and is surrounded by some of the most interesting medieval buildings in the city. Here you can see numerous attractive and charming places, such as The Bridge of Liars, built in 1859 and officially named Liegende Brucke, the first Romanian metal bridge. It links the old city to the new city. Casa Hermes, Turnul Sfatului (The Tower of Counselling), The House of Arts, etc are also part of this square.
The Huet Square is dominated by the Evangelical Cathedral and is surrounded by historical buildings in the Gothic style. Here we can admire: The Tower of the Stairs, one of the oldest buildings in Sibiu; Brukenthal High-School, the oldest school in Romania; the statue of the Teutsch Bishop.
The Brukenthal National Museum is one of the most important baroque monuments in Romania. The palace was the official residence of the baron Samuel von Brukenthal, governor of Transylvania. Upon finishing the construction, the baron deposited his art collection here.
The Zoological and Technical Garden are situated in the Dumbrava forest, in a beautiful national park which was founded in the 18th century.
In 2007 Sibiu and Luxembourg have been declared cultural capitals of Europe. It is the most important cultural event in the history of the city and a great number of tourists were expected to arrive both from the country and from abroad. Indeed, there have been many events, including Prodigy and Scorpions concerts, where plenty of young people came from all over the country and not only.
The city of Sibiu, together with its beautiful surroundings, stand for some of the most visited regions in Romania.
